Established in the early 1960’s, the plasma science and fusion research program at UW is one of the broadest university research and graduate education programs in these areas in the US. The program includes several high-performance plasma confinement experiments, collaborations in national and international experiments, a cross-disciplinary theory and computation effort, and a comprehensive fusion technology program.

The Physics, Nuclear Engineering & Engineering Physics, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Astronomy departments host the research and education programs in plasma science and fusion energy at UW.
